Tuan revealed the place where he hid the bag with other similar packages and the police found 20 other one-kilo packages at the site.

According to the police, they investigated the house of Nguyen Thanh Tuan on Do Luong Street, Vung Tau City on March 27 and found a package containing one kilo of cocaine.

Tuan, 37, told the police that a friend had found a black bag containing some packages at a beach in Ward 10, Vung Tau City on March 24. Tuan followed his friend to the site and took one package to his house on March 25. He also hid the bag so that no-one could find it on the beach.

Tuan checked the package he brought home and thought it was cocaine. He took some photos of the drug and was preparing to sell it.

When being questioned by the police, Tuan revealed the place where he hid the bag with other similar packages. The police found 20 other one-kilo packages at the site.

Vung Tau authorities are further investigating the case.

In January, authorities in the central coastal province of Quang Ngai also seized 288 packages of cocaine each weighing a kilo after a local man stumbled across the packages drifting onto a beach in the area.

This was the largest amount of drugs found drifting onto local beaches so far.

A week earlier, a local man also found three packs containing three kilos of cocaine on the same beach.

Local authorities are co-operating with other agencies to discover the origins of the drugs.

In late 2022, 58 kilos of methamphetamine were also found drifting onto beaches in central provinces from Quang Tri to Binh Thuan.

The Ministry of Public Security suspected smugglers may have abandoned the drugs to avoid possible coast guard or police interceptions.
