STT GDC and VNG several days ago announced the establishment of a joint venture to build a data center in HCM City. The data center will be connected with STT VNG Ho Chi Minh City 1 (the new name of VNG Data Center) via diverse network infrastructure, creating favorable conditions for the connection and expansion of services.

STT VNG Ho Chi Minh City 2 will be capable of accessing neighboring transformer stations, essential telecom networks, transport routes, logistics services, business and industry centers, and other provinces through the HCMC high-speed outer belt road.

Asked about the date of construction, Lionel Yeo said this will depend on market demand. After successfully developing the first data center, they will think about building a new center if market conditions are favorable.

He said STT GDC will work with relevant agencies and the government on electricity supply sources.

VNG’s CEO Le Hong Minh said data centers will see a boom in the time to come because of cloud computing and AI. However, in Vietnam, there have been very few investments in the field, and it has not been mentioned in legal documents.

In Vietnam, there are very few data centers and existing centers are very small. VNG needs to find partners to build large data centers to serve domestic demand and provide services globally.

STT GDC is one such partner. It runs 95 data centers in 11 countries with electricity capacity of 1.7GW.

Asked about solutions to develop the data center market, Minh said this is beyond the capability of one company.

Developing data centers involves many parties because it is an important component of the digital economy. This is a business field which requires huge investments, and no single business can do this.

Viettel inaugurated the 14th data center in Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park on April 10. Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center has a rack capacity three times higher than the average level to satisfy the strong development of AI with requirements for high-performance chips.

With 60,000 servers, 2,400 racks, and 21,000 sq m of floor area, it is one of the biggest data centers in Vietnam.
